- The ChatGPT app (iPhone, iPad or Android) or chatgpt.com in a browser
- A microphone and speaker (your phone has both)
- To be signed in to your ChatGPT account
Open ChatGPT
Open the app, or go to chatgpt.com and sign in.
Tap the Voice icon
Look in the message bar at the bottom for the Voice icon, usually at the right end. It's a different button from the small microphone, which is for dictating text instead of talking back and forth.
Allow the microphone
The first time, your phone or browser will ask to let ChatGPT use the microphone. Choose Allow.
Pick a voice
On your first voice chat you'll be asked to choose a voice. You can change it later under Settings > Voice.
Just start talking
Speak normally. ChatGPT answers out loud, and the conversation also appears as text in the chat. You can interrupt, or ask it to slow down, speed up or keep it short.
Mute or end the chat
Use the microphone button to mute yourself, and the exit (X) button to end the voice conversation.
💡 Good to know: free accounts have voice limits that can change. Voice can make mistakes too, so check anything important.
