A VPN (virtual private network) wraps your internet traffic in a protected tunnel to a VPN company’s server. It hides what you’re doing from the Wi-Fi network you’re on and from your internet provider. It does not make you anonymous, and it doesn’t stop scams or viruses.
What a VPN actually does
Normally your device talks to websites through whatever network you’re on, like café Wi-Fi or your home internet. With a VPN turned on, your device first connects to the VPN company’s server through an encrypted connection, and that server visits websites for you. Websites see the VPN’s IP address instead of yours.
What it doesn’t do
- It doesn’t make you invisible. If you sign in to Google, Facebook or your bank, they still know it’s you.
- It doesn’t stop phishing, scams or malware. A fake website is still fake through a VPN.
- It moves your trust. The VPN company can see the traffic your internet provider used to see. Free VPNs have to make money somehow, sometimes by showing ads or collecting data.
When you probably don’t need one
Most websites and apps already use HTTPS, which encrypts what you send and receive. On your own home Wi-Fi with a good password, a VPN adds little for everyday browsing, banking or shopping.
When a VPN can help
- On public Wi-Fi you don’t trust, like hotels, airports or cafés.
- When your employer requires one to reach work systems.
- When you want to keep your browsing private from your internet provider.
What it means for you
A VPN is a useful tool, not a magic shield. Strong passwords, two-step verification and keeping your devices updated protect you far more day to day.
Quick tips
- If you want one, choose a well-known paid provider with a clear privacy policy over a random free app.
- Your phone’s mobile data is generally safer than unknown public Wi-Fi.
- Be wary of VPN ads that use scare tactics, like “your phone is being tracked right now!”
- A VPN can make some sites or streaming apps act up; turn it off if something stops working.
