5G vs. 4G vs. Wi-Fi calling: what's the difference?

What those letters next to your signal bars mean, and when Wi-Fi calling saves the day.

The short version

4G (LTE) and 5G are generations of mobile network from your carrier. 5G can be faster and handle more people at once, but coverage varies. Wi-Fi calling lets your phone make normal calls and texts over Wi-Fi when the cell signal is weak.

What the letters mean

  • 4G / LTE: the network most phones used through the 2010s. Still fine for calls, maps, video and most apps.
  • 5G: the newer network. Depending on where you are, it can be a little faster than 4G or a lot faster. Carriers use labels like 5G, 5G+ or 5G UW for their faster versions.
  • Older 3G networks in the U.S. were shut down in 2022, so very old phones that only support 3G no longer work.
Think of it like this: 4G and 5G are different highways run by your mobile carrier. 5G has more lanes, but it isn’t built everywhere yet. Wi-Fi calling is a side road through your own Wi-Fi when the highway is jammed or out of reach.

Wi-Fi calling

If your basement, office or rural home has poor cell signal but good Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi calling sends your regular phone calls and texts over the internet instead. People call your normal number as usual. Most major carriers support it at no extra charge; you usually turn it on once in your phone’s settings (search Settings for “Wi-Fi Calling”).

What it means for you

You don’t need a 5G phone for calls, texts or everyday apps. If you’re buying a new phone, it will almost certainly support 5G anyway. If calls drop at home, try Wi-Fi calling before switching carriers.

Quick tips

  • Turn on Wi-Fi calling if you have weak signal indoors.
  • Your phone switches between 4G and 5G automatically; you don’t need to choose.
  • Video on mobile data uses up data plans quickly. Use Wi-Fi at home.
  • Check your carrier’s coverage map for your area before switching plans.
